Hello, welcome to join me in the discussion.

Are you ready for the exams?

About the exam items.

There are three parts in the written exam, including listening, reading and writing. There are 3 items in Listening: table filling, Multiple Choice and spot dictation and filling in a summary. In Reading there are 3 passages and the item types include Multiple Choice, match and filling in a summary and True or False. In writing you are asked to write a short text in about 150 words. There is also a separate speaking test.

Have you got an Exam Guide? All is explained in it.

To get fully prepared for the exam.

To get familiar with the item types, you have to read the Guide to the Exam. Go through the reading texts in the book. Look at the writings you have done during the course, such as describing an eating out experience, one of the parties or celebrations you have had, your favourate sport, etc.

Please read the postings and good luck!

You have to use them from time to time.

You need to learn the new words in the sentence in which you found it, which means learning in the context. You need to use it as much as possible. You can also make separate lists of words that belong together in some way - like the names of vegetables, adjectives, etc. On your way to work or while you are travelling, you could say the things around you in English. You can also find your own way of learning new words.

For this course, you can focus on the common words, and don't worry about those technical ones.

I wonder when we will have the term exam?

Recently,I feel very busy. On the one hand, I have to deal with the work from school, on the

other hand ,I must finish my English course. What should I do? Now I'm preparing for the

term exam, I don't know when we will have the term exam. Please tell me. Thanks a lot.

July 15th.

How to write a letter of complaint ?

Could you please read Activity 6 in the unit?

To get familiar with the item types, you have to read the Guide to the Exam. Go through the reading texts in the book. Look at the writings you have done during the course, such as describing an eating out experience, one of the parties or celebrations you have had, your favourate sport, etc.

Read through the Guide for the Exam, first.

To get familiar with the item types, you have to read the Guide to the Exam. Go through the reading texts in the book. Look at the writings you have done during the course, such as describing an eating out experience, one of the parties or celebrations you have had, your favourate sport, etc.

If you have studied seriously, you needn't worry.

No, it is not that difficult. As long as you have done all the tasks in the book, you should be OK with the exam.

Thank you very much!

The purpose of the course is to improve your communication skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. So you should do all the tasks in the book. It is no use just reading through them. Remember learning by doing. There are many new words in the book. You do not need to worry about the technical terms. Focus on the common words. Practise around the topics included in the book. As long as you work hard during the term, you will improve your English bit by bit. If you have time, listen to and read in English. Do not just limit your study in the book itself.

问:English at leisure is really quite a useful subject in daily life in English speaking countries. I suggest learning about it together. If so all of us will improve our English a lot. May we be successful!

You could learn from each other by working together and you can also encourage each other when someone feels bored.

问:This course is really useful, but what if students are not interested in it?

They should know that as English major students, they have to improve their speaking ability. Wherever they work, either as a teacher of English or in other jobs involved in using English as a tool, to be able to speak fluent English is very impressive. And this course is helping them to achieve that.

Sorry I did not realise your posting until almost 6 yesterday. Were you waiting online all that time? I do apologise.

Now the answer to your questions.

  1. Use of English 10 items 20 points

So you have to practise this part. You cannot find this kind of questions in Book 3 and 4. But they are in 直通车.

  2. Reading Comprehension 4 passages 20 items 40 points

  3. Vocabulary and Structure 25 items 25 points

  4. Writing one passage 15 points

  Focus on practising simple topics.

I do not think there are two sets of exam papers, but I am not sure.

The pass line is not fixed. So do as much as you could in the exam. Be confident.

If you fail this time, there is another one in June and in September as well.

  Good luck!

That is a very good idea. If you can chat online with native speakers, it will certainly help you a lot. And it can also make you wore motivated in English learning.

The purpose of the course is to improve your communication skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. So you should do all the tasks in the book. It is no use just reading through them. All the good luck with your English studies.

Hello, welcome to this afternoon activity. We are going to talk about the course of English at Leisure today. It's an interesting course, isn't it? Hope we can enjoy our discussing in the spring air.

Face-to-face teaching

How about the face-to-face teaching? Do we have enough time for the face-to-face teaching and how about the sufficient teaching methods? This course needs real situation, and it won't be difficult for those who usually enjoy their leisure time? Do you use comparisons (e.g.Britain and China) to make the knowledge more accessible to the students?

Time flies, let us take a rest & enjoy the jokes.

  Joke 1

Any minimum criteria set will be the maximum value used.

Any producing entity is the last to use its own product.

Any simple idea will be worded in the most complicated way.

Any smoothly functioning technology is indistinguishable from a "rigged" demo.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Any task worth doing was worth doing yesterday.

Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.

Any theory can be made to fit any facts by means of appropriate additional assumptions.

Any time things appear to be going better, you have overlooked something.

Any time you wish to demonstrate something, the number of faults is proportional to the number of viewers.

Any tool dropped while repairing a car will roll underneath to the exact center.

Note: the above is something true, rather than joke, I think.

  Joke 2

  Deep Thoughts

It's not good to let any kid near a container that has a skull and crossbones on it, because there might be a skeleton costume inside and the kid could put it on and really scare you.

I can see why it would be prohibited to throw most things off the top of the Empire State Building, but what's wrong with little bits of cheese? They probably break down into their various gases before they even hit.

If you're a circus clown, and you have a dog that you use in your act,

I don't think it's a good idea to also dress the dog up like a clown, because people see that and they think, "Forgive me, but that's just too much."

Here's a good joke to do during an earthquake: straddle a big crack in the ground, and if it opens wider, go "Whoa! Whoa!" and flail your arms around, like you're going to fall in.

If you ever discover that what you're seeing is a play within a play, just slow down, take a deep breath, and hold on for the ride of your life.

It makes me mad when people say I turned and ran like a scared rabbit. Maybe it was like an angry rabbit, who was running to go fight in another fight, away from the first fight.

What is it that makes a compete stranger dive into an icy river to save a solid gold baby? Maybe we'll never know.

Some suggestions on learning English.

  Listening and repeating

If you have a cassette recorder, you can play a sentence spoken by someone, stop the recorder and then say the sentence yourself several times. Then play the next sentence and do the same thing. When you have practised imitating the individual sentences, then go back to the beginning of the tape, but this time practise saying several sentences together. If you have, or can borrow an extra recorder, you can use one to play the original, and the other to record your own speech. If you do this, you can listen to both the original speech and your own repetition of it to compare them.

Be careful to use recordings of real spoken language. Recordings of people reading texts aloud are less useful because written English isn’t the same as spoken English and you will not practise natural speech.

  Reading aloud

Many students practise speaking by reading aloud from their book. This can be useful to a certain extent, but there are two problems. First the text in the book is not likely to be natural spoken language, it is usually written for someone to read silently, not to speak aloud, so again you may be practising unnatural language. Second, unless you know how a native speaker would say the sentence, you have no model of the correct and natural rhythm and tune of the sentence to copy, and may, once again be practising ‘unnatural’ English. If you do practise by reading aloud, make sure that what you are reading is a conversation, and, if possible, get your tutor or a native speaker to read it to you first. This way you will have an idea of how it should sound.

  Talking to someone else

Having a conversation with a real person is, of course, the best way of practising spoken English. You should take every chance you have to do this. Ideally, you should practise with a native speaker, but this is not at all essential. Remember that in the world there are more people who speak English as a second or third language than there are native speakers, and you will often have to use English with people who are not American, British, Australian and so on. So take every opportunity you can find to talk with foreigners such as tourists. Be careful to ask them politely first if they will be willing to talk to you for a while. Remember that they have not come to China to act as English teachers, and may want to concentrate on seeing the sights or talking to each other.

Don’t forget, there are many occasions when Chinese people use English to each other, especially when there are foreigners present, so you should also practise talking with friends or fellow students.

Afternoon! Mr. Yang.

I'm the teacher giving the lectures for the course "English at leisure" in NingBo Radio and TV University.

  Firstly, questions from the textbook.

Page 135. text 4. I'm wondering what do the abbreviations "MSR" "SR" "MS" "M" mean in the text.

Secondly, according to the tests for the former years, there are still lots items outside the textbook and guided book. While it seems that the English proficiency of the freshmen is no better than or even worse than those in the last years. So is it possible to make the test to be more text-oriented.

Hi: Ms. Xie,

You have got very challenging questions. Re the first one, please refer to Page 132, the answers are in the BOX. Re the second one, we have already reduced the test to the time limitation. Anyway, we can try to work out the better way. How many students studying this course in your RTVU? Does this coursebook match their expectations?

We have about 100 students this semester. I think the coursebook's ok, the key problem is the assessment book for the students......:>

Welcome to our session. How long have you been with this course? How many students do you have? Do they like the teaching materials?

李宁琴:i have been teaching this course for about 4 years. our students' number varies every term, the least being 15,the most being 60. our students usually ignores the teaching materials because they even don't have time to study the books and some of them don't have a VCD or they couldn't go on internet. thus for me, i don't know what to say.

I am sorry to hear that. Those may add more jobs to you. Can you cope with this situation? How?

The improved examination has finished. How about the feedback? Are there any inconveniences for our students? Do they have enough time to complete their answer sheets? Do we need any more changes?

The test's quite ok for my students here since this is one of the first courses for them. And usually it helps students go ahead with the second term study.

On the whole, it is not bad, since the students all finished their paper in time and the marks are not bad than last years here in Ningbo.

But I"m wondering if there's the possibility to improve the assessment book.

Thank you for your answers and suggestions.

Hi, dear Prof. Yang! Nice to meet you again!

I'm sorry for my short memory. It's good to have you here.

I'd love to participate this discussion more but I'll have to attend the interview for teacher candidates this afternoon; it's bad to say goodbye to you, Miss Yang. Hope I can be back before you leave.

Take your time. We'll miss you.

Yes. Welcome! I just noticed that there two teachers from Gansu RTVU. Are you two both teaching this course? How do you teach when you have classes? Do your students like this course?

That's a wonderful job! Can you add more information, e.g. the date, the country, some brief history?

I am afraid we have to say goodbye for today. We'll have another session on June 28. Our students can bring their questions and suggestions. All welcome.

Today, many thanks to the teachers from Guangdong, Ningbo and Gansu.

Welcome to the discussion today. We are going to talk about the course of "English at Leisure". Welcome.

The main learning objectives

There are 8 chapters in the course, while each chapter represents one objective.

shopping

Shopping is one of the most popular activities for people, esp. for women. You'll go to shops whenever you need something, or you feel happy/unhappy, or you have enough time, or you just want to go to shops.

Then how can Chinese people learn things concerning shopping in English? O.K. Come to our course. You can speak out the shops and stores' names correctly, you can do your business there (bargaining and buying); you can express freely your ideas towards the commodities and the services in shops; you'll know you are protected by what guarantee statements in the UK; finally, you can write a letter to complain the faulty goods. Remember, you have to write a letter of complaint with the right layout.

Gatherings & Celebrations

The two occasions, Xmas and the new year, are drawing near. Have you sent out your Xmas cards to your friends both home and abroad? What words do you put on the cards? And how do you make your conversation in parties/post parties, like birthday party, opening ceremony, etc.? How do you write replies to invitations? ... Those are the main learning objectives in this chapter.

Eating & Drinking

This chapter is a very interesting topic. I think most of us enjoy eating and drinking. Chinese people and English people eat different foods, they might drink the same thing nowadays, esp. in big cities in China. Pubs and bars are typical for English culture... I am sure you'll know more about eating and drinking in Britain when you finish this chapter.

Home Improvement

In this chapter, we are going to talk about changing homes, DIY, tools for home improvement and why English people like to decorate their homes. Do you have your experience to decorate your home? Your experience will surely help you understand more about home improvement in Britain.

Time flies, one hour passed. Let's have a break and read some interesting passages. We'd have afternoon tea, shouldn't we?

JOKE I

I just needed to use your car

After shopping for most of the day, a couple returns to find their car has been stolen. They go to the police station to make a full report. Then, a detective drives them back to the parking lot to see if any evidence can be found at the scene of the crime. To their amazement, the car has been returned.

There is an envelope on the windshield with a note of apology and two tickets to a music concert. The note reads, "I apologize for taking your car, but my wife was having a baby and I had to hot-wire your ignition to rush her to the hospital. Please forgive the inconvenience. Here are two tickets for tonight's concert of Garth Brooks, the country-and-western music star."

Their faith in humanity restored, the couple attend the concert and return home late. They find their house has been robbed. Valuable goods have been taken from thoughout the house, from basement to attic. And, there is a note on the door reading, "Well, you still have your car. I have to put my newly born kid through college somehow, don't I?"

JOKE 2

Wedding preparation guidelines

  Announcement:

It is the responsibility of the bride's family to announce the wedding in the local newspaper. The announcement should include: A photograph of the bride (A high school yearbook picture is acceptable); Name of the groom, education completed by both bride and groom (do not include elementary school, unless that was the terminal degree.); current employment and planned residence after the ceremony (If living with the bride's parents, it is not necessary to specify where in the house you will reside).

  Invitations:

Since you are having a planned wedding and you are expecting a lot of free stuff, you must send out invitations! They do not have to be lengthy. Something like "You are invited to watch John Smith and Jennifer Johnson make it legal on March 14, 2000." will suffice nicely. If you don't want to be so formal, you can always run down to the local bar and yell "If you aint doing nothin' on the 14th of March, why don't you stop by my house for a cold one about 2 o'clock. Me and Jennifer's having some friends over to watch the ball game and witness our weddin'."

  Proper attire:

For the bride, the key words are "be conservative." No matter how good it may look, refrain from wedding outfits made with spandex or adorned with fringe. Excessive slits and dips also are frowned upon. This is not the occasion to show the world how big "they" are.

For the groom, a rented tuxedo is haute couture, but if it means the difference between going on a honeymoon and staying home, concider some alternatives. For example, a leisure suit with a cummerbund and a clean work shirt can create a natty appearence. And though possibly uncomfortable, say yes to socks and shoes for this special occasion.

  The ceremony:

No matter how urgent the event, loaded weapons have no place at the alter. At the point in the ceremony that says, "If anybody has any reason why these two should no be joined in holy matrimony..." tell the preacher not to pause too long, old flames sometimes die hard and talk too much.

  Reception:

Remember to reserve the UAW hall far in advance, and avoid Saturdays, since that's bingo night. It is perfectly acceptable to ask guests to wipe their feet before entering the hall. After all the cleaning deposit can be the difference between an oil change and a full tune-up for the car.

When dancing never remove undergarments, no matter how hot it is!

  Common wedding questions and answers

Q: Is it all right to bring a date to the wedding?

A: Not if you are the groom.

Q: How many showers is the bride supposed to have?

A: At least one within a week of the wedding.

Q: What music is recommended for the wedding ceremony?

A: Anything except "Tied to the Whipping Post".

Entertainment at home

What's the impression when you see the words? To me, watching TV, reading, cooking... are my favourite activities when I am home, away from work. Then, how about you? Maybe you can add more, like going to theatre, sports field, or playing computer games etc. Now you have to express more towards your preference. Finishing this chapter, you are asked to do an oral presentation. Are you ready?

吴永华:teacher yang: study for English, The language Environment is very important. Otherwise, Learn of quick, forget also quickly. Are you?

I do agree. However, most of our students have got none of the environment, how can they learn if they just totally depend on it? The coursebook has its guidelines on How to Study This Course. Please try to understand it, this may give you some support on the environment.

Try to find your own way to learn English efficiently.

Hi, welcome. Please tell me what difficulties your students have got when they learn the course. Have you got the information on the examination time for this semester?

I don't know the exact time, but I knew it began from 11 of January. Is that so?

The exact time is from 11:00 to 12:30, January 13, 2007.

I know now and thank you for telling me.

You are welcome. BTW, I haven't got anyone from your university for the next year's English teacher training in Britain in 2007.

One of the teacher in our university is allowed to go,but he gives up because he has to share half of the cost. I've also told several teachers of the branch school.

It's a pity for that teacher, the opportunity is really valuable. Thanks for your propaganda.

My pleasure.

Thanks for your joining today. BTW, do you think some 5 minutes activities may help students understand teaching, like Imaginary Classroom. This small activity is designed to describe a room and help practice prepositions--Procedure : Tell students to imagine that the room is absolutely empty: no future, no people, nothing. They have to create their ideal classroom by suggesting how to 'refurnish' it. For example: There is a thick soft wall-to-wall carpet on the floor. There is a television in that corner, with a view.

This kind of activity cab be recreated according to different teaching objectives.

I think this might work. Thanks.

When might it begin? This term or next term?

This term: on the morning of January 13, 2007.

A very typical British life style-- Afternoon tea. I enjoy it.

I agree. It's really the life style they are having.

I like to read what you've written about the introduction of each chapter because it is very useful for the students to know the general idea of this chapter.

Thanks. I'm just trying to attract students' interests, or they will feel tired.

It is very considerate of you to do that.

Thanks.

Hi.The new semester just starts, a long way to the exam. Yes, we're learning the course, then we have to know if everyone understands the course.

Yes.You've got very good memory. We are both new for this course.I think I've got the challenging work, especially after Prof. Liu.

Yes, new to both of us. I'll have to meet the challenge and I really want to get more advice and help from you.

I do hope we can discuss something together. How's the chapt. you are having for the last weeks since the new semester started?

To tell you the truth, most of the students of English major are in the branch school, such as Kai xian and Wushan.(开县、巫山)

Then you are, as me, having the distance among the students. Do you have any opportunies to face the students?

Yes, sometimes, but we often contact each other by email, BBS or online discussion (once a month)

What kinds of difficulties your students can face? Grammer? Skills? Or something else?

Skills, I may say, esp. oral English as they have no chance to speak with the native speakers.

I understand this. Can they be grouped and guided to talk on some subjects like shopping in shops, having house decorated and going out having team sports and so on?

They are required to do such kind of oral practice, but I'm not sure whether they do it or not.

Then how can you set requirements on checking?

At the end of the term, the teacher of our uni will go to the branch to check if they do according to 收形考册.

  Constantly complaining about the temperature

A customer was bothering the waiter in a restaurant. First, he asked that the air conditioning be turned up because he was too hot, then he asked it be turned down cause he was too cold, and so on for about half an hour.

Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, he walked back and forth and never once got angry. So finally, a second customer asked him why he didn't throw out the pest.

"Oh, I really don't care or mind," said the waiter with a smile. "We don't even have an air conditioner."

Thank for coming! See you on Dec.19-21 for the examination discuss.
